Program
Since all schools in the LDSB do not have a staff advisor or coach within the school, schools with athletes who want to compete at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Championships are all under a single umbrella within the LDSB. A description of the Administration and Athlete organization is below.
The Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Championship takes place in the first week of June each year in St. Catherine's Ontario. 3 nights lodging, transport of students and equipment is included in fees for participation.
Training for rowing takes place for most of second semester both on dry land and on the water.
Local Competition takes place at the King of the Cataraqui regatta held the weekend before the CSSRA regatta for ALL Athletes.
An overnight training camp is also organized for athletes and usually takes place the mothers day weekend from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon. this depends on availability and budgeted costs.
ATHLETE ORGANIZATION
LDSB ROWING
Students from LDSB Schools
Athletes will practice at the Kingston Rowing Club Located by the Rivermill or at the Limestone Boat & Board Club in Collins Bay.
Equipment (boats, oars, safety boats etc.) are supplied by these organizations
Selection into groups will take place at the start of the season. Please see the TEAM INFO page for more information on selection criteria and the selection process
VARSITY - Athletes selected to train together and compete in crews representing their school at the CSSRA Championship.
DEVELOPMENT - Athletes who are experienced rowers but are not at a competitive level at the beginning of the season. Athletes or crews from this training group may be selected later in the season to participate in the CSSRA Championship if the reach a competitive level. Development crews have the opportunity to compete at other appropriate regattas as part of the Kingston Rowing Club Team
TEAMS (the same organization is done for VARSITY and DEVELOPMENT athletes)
"TEAMS" are Age and/or Weight Category determined.
Teams are groups of rowers who are similar size or experience. All rowers are combined into Teams that will help them progress and are in the largest combination of rowers that is appropriate for the athletes speed and experience. An example would be that athletes from two or more schools that are rowing singles or doubles may combine to form a team that rows a quad so it is safer and easier for them to learn earlier in the season.
Rowers can "row up" in teams (junior can row with seniors, 66 kg can row in 72kg ...etc) and can include students from multiple schools all
training together with a coach
Junior is grade 9 -10,
Senior is grade 11-13.
Men weight categories - 66kg, 72kg & Open
Women weight categories - 59kg, 63kg & Open
CREWS (Varsity will compete at all regattas and events including CSSRA while DEVELOPMENT will compete at local events and in weekly Time Trials)
"Crews" are groups of athletes from a single school competing in an event at CSSRA.
Crews will be combined with other crews to form a "TEAM" to help with training and safety in larger boats.
LIST OF CSSRA EVENTS
Example of how it works:
A grade 10 girl who weighs 57kg and is from KCVI will be in the junior Varsity TEAM. She may do lots of practices with other junior open weight and 59kg athletes from KCVI and FSS in an Eight (8+) and coach.
However, her CREW is a Junior 59kg Coxed Four for KCVI at CSSRA and the other 4 people from her TEAM are in a Junior Coxed Four racing at CSSRA for FSS. But with the benefit that in the early part of the season they are all rowing in an 8+ instead of a smaller 4+. The bigger boat is easier to balance and requires fewer coach boats to coach.
