ROWER INTAKE FORM
LDSB VOLUNTEER DRIVER FORM - Anyone transporting kids other than your own to or from school activities
ROWING 101 FOR PARENTS - Lots of info for Parents.
ROWING BASICS - Lots of good general rowing info for anyone.
"TRYOUTS":
Any student is welcome to try out regardless of experience.
However, if you have NO water experience rowing it is suggested that you take a learn to row course or join the KRC MadSculls or other youth program to learn how to row before trying out for a competitive Varsity Team. There are a limited number of DEVELOPMENT seats available for new rowers and it depends on the availability of coaches and resources.
Safety is Paramount, it is dark in spring mornings and the water is cold. There is a limited number of coaches, boats and resources in the short on-water competitive season our safety plan states: NO INEXPERIENCED ROWER MAY PARTICIPATE IN MORNING ON-WATER ROWING. There are Learn to Row programs that are offered by the Kingston Rowing Club later in the spring but LDSB Rowing is a competitive program with Varsity and Development Teams.
*COXSWAINS participating in morning practices may be allowed with proper supervision and training before they get on the water.
Typically it takes a full season to learn how to row. In your NOVICE year, you may progress to be selected for a Varsity Crew (a crew that goes to CSSRA). It is CRITICAL that you are able to be committed to rowing with your crew for each practice. Dates for Training Camps and Competition can NOT be Missed.
ROWING IS A CRITICAL TEAM SPORT - IF YOU ARE MISSING A CREW MEMBER, YOU CAN'T GO ON THE WATER TO PRACTICE.
THERE ARE NO SUBSTITUTIONS IN ROWING. FASTEST AND SLOWEST MEMBERS OF A CREW ALL WIN AND LOSE TOGETHER.
SELECTION:
DEVELOPMENT = Rowers with no racing experience or rowers that are not yet at a competitive level but may be selected later in the season to compete at CSSRA if they progress to a competitive level. (CREWS CAN BE MADE FROM STUDENTS FROM DIFFERNT SCHOOLS)

HOW IT WORKS:
Final CSSRA Crews are determined later in the year after racing performance has been observed at a number of Time Trials and events. This allows Development Athletes to reach a varsity level as they progress own the water over a season.
*Athletes selected to row in the DEVELOPMENT GROUP or Novice events from the start of the season may be selected for CSSRA competition as determined by the coaches and final Time Trials.
Varsity Crew Selection Criteria:
Selection criteria for crews is based on the following indicators in no particular order:
**Fees are set in the spring by the KRC and based on transportation and hotel costs. Fees that we anticipate each year are on registration forms are based on what our experience has been with hotels
**FEES include transportation, lodging, Camps, Entries, Facility fees (Kingston Rowing Club), equipment use, required registration in Rowing Canada and RowOntario.
Spring fees are DUE APRIL 1 or BEFORE YOU GO ON THE WATER
(approximately $400 for development or $700 for Varsity including transport and Hotels at CSSRA - St. Catherine's ON - fees are subsidized by fundraising in the winter)

SELECTION:
- Coaches select students into programs starting with tryouts around March 1st (week or two before the March Break).
- Teams are organized by age or weight class and include all novice and experienced rowers. * If you have NEVER rowed competitively you are DEVELOPMENT
- Teams will train with a specific coach so that coach can document selection criteria to determine VARSITY and DEVELOPMENT
- Selection determines VARSITY and DEVELOPMENT Crews
- "DEVELOPMENT" is composed of rowers who have not raced before but have some rowing experience and experienced rowers who are not at a competitive level yet. There are also classifications of NOVICE in many smaller regattas or races. Your first full year of competition you can be considered Novice at many regattas and therefore race Novice events. These events can have students from DIFFERENT SCHOOLS together so that we can all learn faster.

- A series of testing on land will commence the first or second week of March and include ergometer tests and strength endurance testing. This information will be used to determine rough groupings of athletes into potential crews for on the water.
- After March break, crews start with coaches and train together until ice is gone.
- Once on the water, crews go through a week of practices where crews may combine in larger boats (eights) in order to assess on-water ability.
- Large teams (eights and some fours) are determined after 1-2 weeks on the water
- Crews are determined after some seat racing for smaller boats (fours, quads, doubles)
- Individuals can race a maximum of two events at CSSRA. Athletes who row in two boats may row in a PRIMARY boat and also row in a SECONDARY boat. So a rower may be in a PRIMARY Junior 8+ and row a second event like a lightweight Junior 4+. Or rowers may be in a Junior 8+ and not have a secondary entry.
Final CSSRA Crews are determined later in the year after racing performance has been observed at a number of Time Trials and events. This allows Development Athletes to reach a varsity level as they progress own the water over a season.

Varsity Crew Selection Criteria:
Selection criteria for crews is based on the following indicators in no particular order:
- Attitude and commitment
- Ergometer 2000m time and/or 6000m time
- Testing of physical fitness (wall sits, push-ups, sit-ups, squat jumps, running, Beep Test etc.)
- On water ability and technique
- Coachability and improvement through tryouts (very important for novices to progress to competition in their first year)
- Seat racing results on water (mostly used to determine small boat combinations)
